The solution is to import all your tracks into Traktor first, then import your NML to build your playlists, along with importing custom metadata and cues.

I did just as you suggested.
Started with a fresh library in Traktor.
imported all songs directly from their master folder.
Then all album art was there.
Then I imported the "mixo" traktor xml.
All of the album art vanishes.

Oh that's strange, that's the recommended method. There doesn't seem to be an easy solution. I guess you could try restarting Traktor or right-click the tracks and Check Consistency but again it gives mixed results.
